From the suburbs of Kushtia to a Master's degree at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata — a life built around Manipuri dance.
Also known as Sony Chowdhury
Born on 24 April 1989 in Kushtia, Bangladesh, Babrul grew up under the influence of Bangladeshi media and initially believed glamour mattered more than dance itself. That perception changed completely once he joined Dhriti Nartanalaya, the institute spearheaded by acclaimed choreographer Warda Rihab — the mentor who would go on to shape his entire career.
"She made me realise how the story behind the routine is what matters, more than gorgeous clothes or exquisite makeup," he has said of his guru. Under her guidance, he later travelled to Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata for graduate study — the same institution where Warda herself trained — and returned to Bangladesh to help build a stronger ground for Manipuri dance in South Asia.
Today he assists in running Dhriti Nartanalaya, teaches Manipuri dance workshops across the country, and continues to perform, choreograph, and design costumes and makeup for major productions.
