Babrul Alam Chowdhury — known on stage as Sony Chowdhury — is a Manipuri dancer, choreographer and teacher whose performances have travelled from Dhaka to Kolkata, Tokyo to Sydney, over more than two decades on stage.
Sony began formal training at Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in Dhaka before travelling to Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, to complete a Master's of Fine Arts in Manipuri dance under legendary gurus — a fully-funded programme he credits to the guidance of his mentor, choreographer Warda Rihab.
Since then he has performed, taught and choreographed across Bangladesh, India, Japan, Thailand, Qatar, Myanmar, Belgium, Australia and Nepal — and continues to train the next generation at Dhriti Nartanalaya in Dhaka.
